Phenomena Affecting Used Nuclear Fuel Cladding Temperatures during Vacuum Drying Operations

چکیده

A two-dimensional computational model of a loaded used nuclear fuel canister filled with helium gas was constructed to predict the cladding temperature during vacuum drying conditions. It includes distinct regions for the fuel pellets, cladding and helium within each basket opening. Symmetry boundary conditions are employed so that only one-eighth of the package cross-section is included, and temperature boundary conditions on the canister exterior surface in contact with water is used. Thermal modeling includes heat generation within the fuel pellets, conduction heat transfer within all solid components, and conduction and surface-to-surface radiation across the gas filled regions. The peak clad temperature is determined as a function of fuel heat generation rate, assuming atmospheric pressure helium. The allowable fuel heat generation rate, which brings the peak clad temperature to its limit is determined. The Willis solid/gas interfaces thermalresistance model is verified against discrete-velocitymethod slip-region rarefied-gas heat transfer calculated across planar and cylindrical helium filled-gaps for a range of thermal accommodation coefficients, α. The Willis model is then implemented at the solid/gas interfaces within the canister model. Simulations with a helium pressure of 100 Pa and α = 1, 0.4 and 0.2 are preformed to determine how much hotter the fuel cladding is under vacuum drying conditions compared to atmospheric pressure. The results showed that the allowed fuel heat generation rate is reduced by up to 34% for α = 0.2. Transient simulations are performed, and show that the fuel cladding temperature rises for roughly 50 hours after the loaded canister is removed from the water pool.

Development of a used fuel cladding damage model incorporating circumferential and radial hydride responses

At the completion of the fuel drying process, used fuel Zry4 cladding typically exhibits a significant population of d-hydride inclusions. These inclusions are in the form of small platelets that are generally oriented both circumferentially and radially within the cladding material. There is concern that radiallyoriented hydride inclusions may weaken the cladding material and lead to issues du...

Safety Analysis of Spent Fuel Transportation Cask of Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant through the Passing of Fire Tunnel with ANSYS®10.0

The spent fuel assemblies (FAs) of Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant are planed to be transported by TK-13 casks. Each spent fuel transportation cask holds 12 spent FAs and has a thick steel container to provide shielding. The calculations have been performed for FAs with burn ups of 60 MWd/kg and a 3-years cooling period. The ANSYS®10.0 general finite element analysis package was se...

The Model Establishment and Analysis of TRACE/FRAPTRAN for Chinshan Nuclear Power Plant Spent Fuel Pool

Abstract—TRACE is developed by U.S. NRC for the nuclear power plants (NPPs) safety analysis. We focus on the establishment and application of TRACE/FRAPTRAN/SNAP models for Chinshan NPP (BWR/4) spent fuel pool in this research. The geometry is 12.17 m × 7.87 m × 11.61 m for the spent fuel pool. In this study, there are three TRACE/SNAP models: one-channel, two-channel, and multi-channel TRACE/S...

The Analysis of TRACE/FRAPTRAN in the Fuel Rods of Maanshan PWR for LBLOCA

Fuel rod analysis program transient (FRAPTRAN) code was used to study the fuel rod performance during a postulated large break loss of coolant accident (LBLOCA) in Maanshan nuclear power plant (NPP). Previous transient results from thermal hydraulic code, TRACE, with the same LBLOCA scenario, were used as input boundary conditions for FRAPTRAN. The simulation results showed that the peak claddi...

Preliminary assessment of accident-tolerant fuels on LWR performance during normal operation and under DB and BDB accident conditions

Following the severe accidents at the Japanese Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in 2011, the US Department of Energy initiated research and development on the enhancement of the accident tolerance of light water reactors by the development of fuels/cladding that, in comparison with the standard UO2/ Zircaloy (Zr) system, can tolerate loss of active cooling in the core for a considerably ...
